Dark Fiber Monitoring

When monitoring dark fiber, one or more fibers not carrying live traffic are selected from each fiber optic cable for monitoring purposes. If something happens to one fiber, most of the time it will happen to all fibers in the same cable. Thus by monitoring a few fibers per cable, it is possible to economically monitor the entire fiber optic network.
